Meanwhile in Turkey

Concept / Premise: “Meanwhile, in Turkey” is a short film about the agency of Turkish women in a time of political and social unease. It is also a story about labor and love. Finally, it is about the heart-opening effect of making something beautiful with your hands.

Of course the paradox is that without the world of on-line blogs and web feeds we may never have met the wonderful women who led us to our subjects: three women artisans in Turkey. These are women who carry on traditions handed down to them from generations of mothers teaching daughters.

Aired PBS, Southern Lens, 2010

'Soapy' arrived in Americus, Georgia in 1960 with nothing but shearing tools in a paper bag. After 50 years, his one-chair shop in the center of town is still the hub of local life – a far reach from the techno-savvy, zip-drive world.
